Core business applications - do you need a new system?

Hello ,

In last month's edition of Tales from the CTO, we talked about ways in which leaders can get more out of their existing technology stack, specifically what you need to think about from a sales and marketing perspective. This month, we want to take the concept of your technology stack one step further to help you evaluate your core business applications from a value and risk perspective. Let's dive in!

How do you know when it's time for a new system in your organization? In today's technology landscape, ensuring that your organization is getting the most out of your critical business applications is of paramount importance.

As a responsible manager, you need to think about how your core business applications are adding value to the business. Does this mean that you should address every low-value application that your organization has? Probably not - this can be expensive in terms of time and resources. However, if you prioritize the value of your applications effectively, you can focus the majority of your time and effort on the applications that have the potential to bring the highest value to your business.

The Risk and Value Chart is a valuable tool for evaluating your systems and applications. It helps you move away from being in a high risk, low value scenario toward a low risk, high value scenario. Consider the following questions:

From a value perspective...

  • How is the application you're leveraging adding value to the business?
  • Is the application delivering value to the business commensurate to where you need to be in the future?
  • Do your applications provide reporting that can enable you to make good business decisions?
  • Do your applications make you more efficient and/or effective?

From a risk perspective...

  • Is the application no longer safeguarding the interests of the business?
  • Is the application truly posing a risk - either from a lack of adherence to established processes or completing tasks outside the application? Or is the application simply built on legacy technology that is making things difficult?

Check out the video below for further details about the questions that have been asked above and why they're so vital to the new way of looking at your core business applications. Also, feel free to drop me a line at CTO@proserveit.com if you have any questions, suggestions, or feedback, or if you want to start a conversation around making your core applications more valuable and less risky.
